Summary In this week’s service, Pastor Steven McIlvaine  explored the complex and often difficult topic of forgiveness. Discussing Peter’s question in the Gospel, he noted that Jesus’ instruction to forgive “seventy times seven” serves as a teaching that forgiveness is not about keeping score. Through the parable of the servant who was shown immense mercy yet refused to show it to others, Rev. Mclaine emphasized that because God extends incredible grace to us despite our shortcomings, we are called to extend that same mercy to those around us.  Pastor McIlvaine  also addressed the practical emotional toll of unforgiveness through the analogy of a backpack filled with heavy rocks. He explained that while we carry the weight of these past hurts, the people who caused them often do not, meaning our unforgiveness only burdens ourselves. He encouraged the congregation to surrender these “rocks” to God—a process that may require doing so repeatedly—noting that forgiveness is an act of great strength that allows us to release our anger and create space for God to create a new future.
