Fairhaven UMC

United Methodist Church

  • First Food and Friends
Join us on the first Saturday of each month at the First United Methodist Church on Centre Avenue to work in the kitchen to provide a hot meal for the 50-100 clients that depend on this soup kitchen each week.

    No food service experience required!

Arrive around 9:00, and we are done around 12:30.

You get a free lunch, too!

    Blessing Bags
Donate small toiletries (sample size), snack bars, cheese and crackers, wet wipes, hand/foot warmers to be placed in plastic bags.

Then take a couple of the bags to carry with you and give them out to those in need. Place donations in the large white hamper marked Blessing Bags on the First Sunday.

Completed bags will be available to take each Sunday.

    Support the Carrick Food Pantry
Bring non-perishable food items No Glass Containers and paper products such as paper towels, toilet paper, tissues, and diapers.

Bins will be put in the downstairs hallway for this collection on the Second Sunday of the month.

Take advantage of BOGOs and ten $10 specials at the stores to help those in need.

Clothing for the Washington City Mission
This mission serves 80 homeless men and 50 homeless women and children.

They welcome any clothing and food items we can give. Bring clothing in on the Second Sunday of each month and food donations on the Third Sunday.

Please be sure all clothing is washed. We have limited storage space, so keep these donations at home until the proper collection days!

First Food and Friends Shower Facility
Donate NEW men’s and women’s underwear, shaving cream, disposable razors, wash cloths and bath towels to be used by people who use the showering facility at First Food and Friends.

Bring these items in on the LAST SUNDAY of each month, and we will deliver them when we go to work at the kitchen.

    Prayer Shawls
Know of someone who could use some support? Maybe a prayer shawl from a loving congregation would be appreciated!

See Mary Louise Regan to give a name of someone in need or for details on how to get involved.

Welcome to the First Sunday of Lent!

When most people think of Lent, they think of…

    • Temptation and sorrow, doom and gloom.
    • Giving up chocolates!
    • Giving up pop!
    • And, horror of horror in our house, perhaps even giving up Chipotle!

    Not exactly cheery topics!

But, there can be joy in Lent too!
    Lent is about…

    • Taking on habits that make us more like Jesus.
    • Giving up habits that make us less like Jesus.
    • Tapping into the grace of Jesus that makes it all possible!

    Taking Something On For Lent

    • Can eating chocolate-covered strawberries each day be a good Lenten discipline? Yes!
    • We all struggle with different sins.
    • For those fighting to see themselves as worthy of God’s love, what a great discipline!

    Other Suggestions for
Lenten Practices…

    • Practice Gratitude on a Regular Basis.
    • Learn a new way of praying!
    • Read a psalm or a proverb each day.
    • Pray nightly for persecuted Christians around the world, especially the families of those Egyptian Christians recently killed by ISIS.
    • Practice saying ‘no’ to self-defeating thoughts!
    • Take part in our Lenten Bible study!

What Are you Giving Up for Lent?

    • Why not take Pope Francis’s suggestion and give up “indifference to others” this Lent?
    • Why not give up time for volunteering or visiting one of our sick or shut-in church members?
    • Be creative in what you give up!

    • BEYOND Casual Worship – The Disciples’ Paths

Proverbs 4:18 tells us that “the path of the righteous is like the light of the dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day.” And yet that path is filled with pit stops, detours, and even times when we’ve completely lost our way. Never fear, though, because God’s word to us in Scripture is a guiding light pointing us back in the right direction!

That’s why this Lent for Beyond, fitting in with our Lenten theme of following “A Disciple’s Path,” we’ll be looking at the diverse paths traveled by God’s people in the Bible.  From Joseph and Ruth in the Old Testament to Mary and Paul in the New, the path of the righteous is never easy. But we serve a God who uses even the bumps in the road as a means of shaping us into the faithful women and men God created us to be. So come on out for Beyond each Thursday during Lent and join us as we continue our journey of faith together!

    Blessing of the Ashes

O God, our maker and judge, you have created us from the dust of the earth and, because of our sin, we must return to dust: Grant that through the imposition of these ashes we may be bright to an awareness of our mortality, to true repentance, and trust in your life-giving grace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
    Amen.

    Prayer of Confession

L: God, you are Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer.

P: You formed us from the earth and breathed life into our bodies. You walk among us and offer us your life. You call us together and breathe your Spirit through us.

L: You have made us in your image.

P: Now remind us that still, we are not God. For we confess that we have forgotten.

L: We have forgotten that it is your kingdom, not ours.
We have forgotten to listen for your voice, so often drowned out by our own. We have forgotten that you call all creation to life and relationship, not rules and regulations.

    ~silence~

L: We pray “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done”
and yet we confess, O Lord, that we are very attached to our own wills.

P: We ask your forgiveness for the times we think we have all the answers. We confess that we have slammed the door, keeping others out, we have stood in the doorway monitoring who comes and goes, and sometimes we have barged right through others’ doors, caring little for the consequences. Forgive us, O God, and turn us again to your way. Fill us with your steadfast love, and lead us into life.

    ~silence~

L: You call, O Lord, sometimes in a storm and sometimes in a silence, through your word written and proclaimed, through the voice of stranger and enemy and friend.

P: I confess that I have not always been an eager student of your word; I have talked more than I have listened in prayer, and that I might not recognize your voice in a crowd. I admit that I have followed other voices, and that my own voice has often been louder than yours. I have stood by the door, but not walked through. I have stood by the door, and kept others from walking through. I have stood by the door, calling people to walk my way rather than yours. Forgive me, O God, and turn me again to your way. Fill me with your steadfast love, and lead me into life.

    ~silence~

L: You, Lord, are Healer, making wholeness where once there was brokenness. You offer a way of life that carries hope for all the world.

P: Yet we turn our eyes from a dying creation, ignoring your call to care. We admit that we choose what is easy, at the expense of the people and the planet you have created. We confess that we want the green pastures and still waters for ourselves, and we have set up systems in which some waste away while we simply waste. When our doors are unmarked, so only those in the know may enter, when our hearts are firmly locked against anything new, when our habits are closed and therefore shut others out, forgive us, O God, and turn us again to your way. Fill us with your steadfast love, and lead us into life.

    ~silence~

L: We stand at the threshold of community; of grief; of hope; of repentance; of possibility; of fear; of forgiveness; of life.

    ~silence~

Every day is filled with opportunities both missed and taken—
to speak up, to speak out, to keep silent, to listen…
to hope, to despair, to heal, to hurt, to help…
to come in and to go out and to find pasture.

    ~silence~

    Act of Absolution

L: According to the sure promises of the Gospel, I declare unto
you that your sins are forgiven, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
    Amen.

P: According to the sure promises of the Gospel, we declare unto you that your sins are forgiven, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
    Amen.
