April 17, Maundy Thursday Options:

maundythursday
Maundy Thursday takes its name from the Latin word “mandatum”, or commandment. On this day of Holy Week, we recall the new commandment Jesus gave his disciples: [Jesus said:] I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. (John 13: 34, 35)

    Spencer UMC
    117 Spencer Avenue
    Pittsburgh, PA 15227
    • 6:00 pm – Common meal
    • 7:30 pm – Tenebrae Service

The word Tenebrae means darkness. This solemn service was first celebrated in the fourth century. In the service, candles are gradually extinguished, symbolizing the flight and denial of the disciples and friends of Jesus after his crucifixion. The Christ candle is extinguished and not relighted until Easter morning, reliving the suspense of the first disciples who had not yet experienced the resurrection. Scriptures and music help set the tone for this service.

Spencer UMC invites the Partnership churches to gather with them for a meal of fish and macaroni and cheese. A free-will offering will be received, but you are asked to make a reservation to aid in meal planning. For reservations call Spencer at 412-881-4000 by April 15.
